Spirit and satire pour forth from the “Godmother of Punk” in her first original collection since 2004’s critically-acclaimed Trampin’. Banga borrows its title from the The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Banga was the name of Pontius Pilates’ dog in the novel as well as the nickname of Bulgakov’s second wife, Lubyov, the woman who brought animals into his life.
Dead souls, tattered coats, and rusty bikes feature heavily in the album, nodding again toward Russian absurdist literature and the Soviet response to Western Modernism. Stringy-melodic guitar riffs from longtime collaborator and friend Tom Verlaine compliment Smith’s sometimes sardonic, always genuine lyrics.
In the video above, Patti performs “This is The Girl,” her ballad in memory of Amy Winehouse, with her daughter Jesse Smith. Mother-daughter singer/songwriters Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche plushed out the all-acoustic set at NYC’s City Winery on Mother’s Day, 2012.
